New Democracy chooses European election candidates

The New Democracy European parliamentary candidates list contains mostly party members and a few former Euro-parliamentarians, but it too carries the occasional celebrity. The list was announced today by the PM, uncharacteristically in show bizz tones at a central Athens hotel.

Among the non political candidacies, the most high profile was announced yesterday, when veteran football international Thodoris Zagorakis visited the PM in his office and made statements in front of the cameras. The captain of the national team which won the Euro 2004 title in Portugal, was probably the most unexpected candidate, given that he had never expressed any political aspirations.
Other non political candidates include music composer and former Euro MP Stavros Xarchakos, lawyer and former Athens alderman Elisa Vozenberg, National Confederation of Hellenic Commerce president Vasilis Korkidis, Giorgos Momferatos, son of publisher Nikos Momferatos, murdered by November 17 in the 1980s and journalists Maria Spyraki, Yiorgos Kyrtsos, Manolis Mavromatis, and Giorgos Amyras.
Most of the other candidates are mostly non active party members with a few scientists, economists, security forces veterans and other professionals.
