Itea Police Station Bomb Counteracted

  • Written by

Today, a bomb parcel was counteracted by bomb disposal experts in the Greek coastal town of Itea.

It arrived this morning via mail, at Itea's police headquarters. The device held 600 grams of TNT explosives and metallic items that included nuts, bolts and nails, according to counter-terrorism squad officers. If the bomb had been activated, it would have killed all nearby.

The mechanism was hidden inside a book along with batteries and a detonator. It was booby-trapped to ignite an explosion, when the book was opened. The envelope's return address was signed as an Athens Archiepiscopate NGO.

Police forensics labs will receive the remaining parts of the device, for an examination and analysis concerning prior letter bombs, that include ignitions sent to former Civil Protection Minister Mihalis Chrysohoidis, resulting in the death of his policemen aide Georgios Vasilakis. The case remains under investigation with the Greek counter-terrorism service.
