Unregistered Labor Crack Down
In March, unregistered labor concretely declined, as reported by the Labour, Social Security and Welfare Ministry today.
According to "Artemis" special operational project, who conducted undercover job investigations, uninsured work experienced a 23.61% decrease, over 2,112 studied companies in March. The figure is 38.5% less during the same 2013 time frame.
Since September 2013, unregistered labor is lessening, due to Artmeis' high fines that reach up to 10,550 euros per unregistered employee. Labour Minister Yiannis Vroutsis explained, "The time of unaccountability and impunity has finally passed", regarding decades of undocumented work.
The investigations are being led by IKA social security fund and the Work Inspection unit. They focus on economic subdivisions that often hold high rates of undocumented positions. This includes industrial zone, food, beverage, small-scale manufacturing, hair, gas station, transportation, car, hospital, construction, and security industries.
Vroutsis further commented, "For the first time in our country, the fight to deal with the unacceptable phenomenon of unregistered and uninsured work has tangible and measurable results...We have shown a stable and unprecedented political will and we did not hesitate to impose the highest fine ever imposed while suspending the operation of businesses systematically violating the law at the expense of workers".
