Jean-Claude Juncker Visits Athens
The European People's Party candidate for European Commission Presidency Jean-Claude Juncker visited Athens today.
During his trip, Juncker was briefed on migration issues and Athens' metro system extension with Greek officials. During his Athenian stay, he visited Frontex's office, where he discussed migration flow activities with representatives, regarding the Hellenic sea borders.
Juncker was received by Public Order and Citizen Protection Minister Nikos Dendias, Shipping and Aegean Minister Miltiadis Varvitsiotis and Coast Guard Vice Admiral Athanassios Athanasopoulos. He traveled to the coast guard's Search and Rescue Coordination Center, where he was informed of its work and operational efforts. He received a document that underlined the challenges associated with illegal immigration into Greece.
The EC candidate was later received by Development and Competitiveness Minister Costis Hatzidakis, Attiko Metro CEO Christos Tsitouras and Public Works General Secretary Stratos Simopoulos, who discussed the enhancement of the city's metro system. The metro enlargement plan began in March 2012 and is the largest transportation infrastructure mechanism being carried out in Athens right now. The 730 million euro project is predicted to carry 130,000 passengers daily, after its completion in 2017.
Prime Minister Antonis Samaras joined Jean-Claude Juncker at the Acropolis Museum. The two governmental officials observed the Athenian exhibits and looked at the view of the Acropolis from the Museum's outside terrace.
