Kapernaros Quits Independent Greeks
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
Vasilis Kapernaros, the Independent Greeks former parliament spokesman and candidate for Athens Mayor supported by the party, has declared his independence from his former party in parliament. In his letter to parliament president, Evangelos Meimarakis, Kapernaros mentions nothing concerning the reasons which led him to this decision.
Speculation about his exit from the party is high, mostly attributing it to the Independent Greeks low figures in the recent European parliamentary elections. There are some more sinister rumors out there about the possibility of Kapernaros moving away from his former party in order to support the slim coalition government majority.
Whatever the case, according to information in Greek media, Kapernaros was displeased by his low standing in the Athens polls, attributing them to a less than persuasive support from the party heads, MPs and members.
Kapernaros' independence move could very well be just the first of many to come. After next week's Democratic Left's national conference, chances are that at least some of the party's 14 MPs could turn independent or, worse, join other parliament parties. There is always the worst case scenario, according to which the party could split up, which would automatically place its MPs in the independent column.
