Greek Defense Minister Slams Turkish Counterpart

Meanwhile, Greek National Defence Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos raised the issue of the serious situation emerging in Greek-Turkish relations (“the short period of tension” as described it) with his Turkish counterpart Ismet Yilmaz, whom he met at noon today in Brussels, on the sidelines of the meeting of NATO Defence Ministers .

From statements made by the Turkish side after the meeting, it became clear that Ankara is seeking a "package solution" of all Greek-Turkish problems under international law, denoting that the sharp increase in tensions in the Aegean lately were obviously planned and fully controlled by Ankara.

This was implicitly confirmed by the Greek MoD, who however stopped his Turkish counterpart, noting his incompetence in the matter and saying these things will take their time, saying verbatim : " We had the opportunity to refer to other bilateral issues related to the Aegean Sea and the continental shelf and all that. We are not here to solve them. They will take their time and at some point, I'm sure that they will be settled based on the principles of international law and international legitimacy ."

All naval assets available to Greece, approximately 80 surface vessels and all submarines are out in force in the Aegean participating in the naval-air exercise KATAIGIS 2014 (Storm 2014).

The Turkish Ar Force (THK) has been monitoring the exercise with two CN-235 “spy” aircraft, since early morning Tuesday.

The Hellenic Navy and the Hellenic Air Force are testing new operational tactics in various operational scenarios. The Chief of the Navy Staff and the Chief of the Fleet are aboard following the exercise from up close.
So far naval bases are basically empty as all assets have put to sea. The exercise, which will last until Friday , will include night raids supported by Air Force fighters.
The shadoeing Turkish aircraft committed 34 violations of Greek airspace, on Tuesday.
