Thursday Brings PPC Privatization Bill Parliamentary Hearing
On Thursday a Parliament draft bill will be considered, that aims to partially privatize Greece's national electricity agency Public Power Corporation (PPC).
The new bill strives to create a smaller private competitive corporation, to be purchased by a private entity. The privatization of PPC is a controversial issue in Greece; PAOSOk along with Western Macedonia are highly opposed to the change. The majority of PPC's production activities are orchestrated in Western Macedonia.
Today PASOK leader Evangelos Venizelos is scheduled to meet with opposing MPs to determine proposal alterations, before it arrives at Parliament. PPC privatization is by far the largest energy sector reform that has been considered.
It has not yet been determined if the bill will be voted on, on July 10th in the Parliament's first summer conference or on July 22nd, in its second meeting. PPC unions are planning to conduct 48-hour strikes during Thursday's hearing.
