Former Thessaloniki Mayor Receives Lighter Sentance
The former Mayor of Thessaloniki Vassilis Papageorgopoulos' life sentence was shortened today, to 20 years on embezzlement charges, according to reports.
He was originally charged in February 2013 with former Municipality General Secretary Michalis Lemousias and Municipal Treasurer Panayiotis Saxonis. In the Thessaloniki court's new ruling by 3 to 2, Papageorgopoulos is now considered to be an accessory in municipal funds stealing, while serving as Mayor.
The new sentence holds a jail term of ten to twenty years. The former Mayor continued to rally against the changes and stated that he did not embezzle 17.9 million euros and called the law's verdict "a mistake", according to ekathimerini. While Saxonis' 15 year money laundering and embezzlement charges were not altered, Lemousias was granted a sentence reduction from life to a 20 year maximum jail term.
