- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
The atmosphere in Chimara is extremely festive, after the election of Fredi Beleris to the European Parliament.
The elected mayor of Chimara, who has been jailed by an Albanian cangaroo court, after a sham charge of attempting to bribe a voter openly in front of more than a year ago, did exceptionally well, as he is third in votes nationwide, with 96.67% counted.
Fredi Beleris has collected 93,241 votes, behind only Giorgos Autias and Vangelis Meimarakis, with the result causing excitement in Chimara.
The residents of the city gathered outside the offices of Omonia Chimara to watch the results and as soon as they found out that Beleris was solemnly elected, they took to the streets and celebrated, lighting smoke bombs and throwing fireworks.
It remains to be seen how the Albanian judiste system will deal with incarcerating a European Parliament member.
