Greek Night organized on the evening of Tuesday, July 16, 2024 in Athens Square, Astoria, by the new board of directors of the Federation of Greek Associations of Greater New York, chaired by Nomiki Kastanas offered a veritable oasis, in the middle of the summer heatwave .
I
t is the first Greek Night of 2024 and had as its protagonists singer Eva Anastopoulou and Yiannis Staikos on bouzouki andsinging and Babis Sembelidis on keyboards, who performed timeless songs and received theapplause of the audience.
The event was attended by the members of the board and advisers, who had the opportunity to talk with the artists and diaspora members.
The president of the Federation of Greek Associations of Greater New York, Mrs. Nomiki Kastana, welcomed the diaspora members and among other things pointed out that the goal of this concert is to get to know the community and to exchange opinions and thoughts on the program of events that they will prepare for the new season which usually starts in September.
The event was also attended by the president of the Athens Square Steering Committee, Mr. George Delis, who referred to the program of the Greek Nights that will begin in three weeks, specifically on Tuesday, August 6, 2024 and will end on Tuesday, October 1, 2024.
The duration of this year's Greek evenings was shorter than in previous years, due to financial difficulties, and Mr. Delis called on Greek Americans to strengthen the work of the Athens Square Steering Committee.
Athens Square belongs to the Parks Service of the City of New York, therefore the statues and marble columns will be maintained by said Service, because for each project there is a separate reserve fund.
Athens Square is located at the junction of 30th Avenue and 30th Street in Astoria. At its entrance there is a statue of the goddess Athena, while in the background there are columns similar to those of Delphi and near them, the statue of Socrates.
The bust of Aristotle was placed in the left corner, while the statue of Sophocles was placed in the right corner of the Square.
The City of New York has recognized the role of the Steering Committee and the Community in the creation of Athens Square and in 2015 renamed 30th Avenue in front of Athens Square to "Dennis Syntilas Way" in honor of the founder and first president of the Square, the late Deni (Demosthenis) Syntila.
