The bastion Of American Hellenism, as the great community of St. Demetrius of Astoria is often called, on Friday evening, April 25, 2025 at 7:00 p.m. will celebrate the 98th anniversary of its founding and will honor the president of PSEKA and the Pancyprian Association of America, as well as the president of the Parade Committee of the Federation of Greek Associations of Greater New York, Mr. Philip Christopher.

The event will take place at the “Terrace on the Park” Greek community center at 52-11 111th Street, Corona, NY, 11368 and is expected to be attended by representatives of the organized Greek community, as well as the diplomatic missions of Greece and Cyprus in New York.

The honoree is a graduate of St. Demetrius Day School and holds a prominent place in the long list of successful leaders and entrepreneurs who have graduated from the only and largest Greek-American day school not only in New York, but also in America itself.

The organizing committee headed by Yiannis Stroumpakis has taken all the necessary measures not only for the success of the event, but also for its financial success, as its proceeds will be allocated to the strengthening of the school and the smooth functioning of the community.

Mr. Christopher's award takes on particular significance, as the Pancyprian Association of America celebrates its golden jubilee this year.

This is the largest and most active national-local organization in the tri-state area of ​​New York, founded in January 1975, a few months after the Turkish invasion and illegal occupation of Cyprus.

Mr. Christopher is a refugee as he was born in Kyrenia, which is still occupied today, and has played a leading role in the struggle of the Greek diaspora for the resolution of the Cyprus problem.

And he did not stop at just fighting for the Cyprus issue and other national issues.

He fought for the establishment and consolidation of the Pancyprian Association and today in 2025 it is the only national-local organization, which has all the departments starting from the Cultural Department, the Choir, the women's department (WIN) and the theater department.

He also has the football team "New York Pancyprian-Freedoms" which for half a century has been fighting under the flag of Cyprus and knows how to conquer cups and occupy a prominent position among the champion teams of amateur football throughout America, like few others.

He also maintains the children's teams "Eleftheria - Pancyprian" which provide the opportunity for approximately three hundred children to train and compete in local championships.

The ticket price is set at $200.00 for adults, $100.00 for students and $75.00 for children under 12 years old.
