The Hellenic Olympic Committee announced that Maria Menounos has accepted the offer to be its Ambassador for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
The popular presenter and actress will also be the Master of Ceremonies at the Touching and Handing Over of the Olympic Flame Ceremonies for 2028.
Menounos was at the HOC offices for the official announcements, while she had a conversation earlier with the President of the Committee, Isidoros Kouvelos.
“I want to thank Maria for being with us and to say that I am very happy and proud that she accepted my proposal. Maria is truly such a bright person and I want to focus on how good a person she is. She is a Greek from the diaspora who truly glorifies and loves her homeland, she wants to be close to it and this gives us more joy and optimism. She will be with us at the HOC. She accepted to be an ambassador for the Greek Olympic Team on the way to Los Angeles,” said Isidoros Kouvelos.
“She will support us in many actions that the HOC will undertake and, of course, I want to mention something very important first. Maria will be Master of Ceremonies at the Flame Touching and Handover Ceremonies in Ancient Olympia and at the Panathenaic Stadium. It is something very important, and Maria, I want to thank you for that. We want the Greek diaspora to be close to the Greek delegation at the Games, to come and support the team, and Maria is the right person for that. Also, for the financial support that the Greek Olympic Committee is seeking for the best presence of the Greek team,” he added.
Menounos: “A great honor, I am proud to be Greek”
Maria Menounos, visibly moved, stated:
“And I, in turn, want to thank you for the proposal; it is a great honor for me. I am proud to be Greek and have the opportunity to be part of this effort. I want to help the athletes as much as I can and bring all the Greeks of America together. Wherever we are, let us be united to help Greece and the team do well. When the day of the lighting of the torch arrives in Ancient Olympia, I know it will be something very important and I will cry.”
Isidoros Kouvelos gave a symbolic gift to Maria Menounos, the statue of the Goddess Nike.
