The Key to the City of New York was presented to His Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew by Mayor Eric Adams at the headquarters of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America.
“You have unlocked our hearts here in the city,” said Mayor Adams, addressing the Ecumenical Patriarch. He also reminded guests that “we are abusive towards Mother Earth,” referring to His Holiness’ environmental initiatives, for which he will be awarded the internationally recognized Templeton Prize on Wednesday night.
This honorary initiative of the Mayor of New York took place on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, during the luncheon hosted by His Eminence Archbishop of America, Mr. Elpidophoros, in honor of the Ecumenical Patriarch, as a token of gratitude to the Templeton Prize Committee.
Earlier, Ecumenical Patriarch Mr. Bartholomew presided over the Doxology celebrated at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in Manhattan, New York.
