The news that Taylor Swift is in Athens initially caused a sensation, which intensified when it was realized that she did not come for a vacation in the Greek islands but for a... wedding in Glyfada.
The questions were solved when the relationship between the couple who were getting married and the singer's partner was realized. George Karlaftis plays for the same NFL team, the Kansas City Chiefs, as Travis Kelce, Taylor Swift's partner.
Who is George Karlaftis
His father is Greek, Matthew Karlaftis, a professor at the National Technical University of Athens, and his mother, Amy, is American. He was born and raised in Athens. He was born in Maroussi in 2001 and until he was 13 years old when his father suddenly passed away, they lived with their family in Psychiko. After the loss of the father of the family (he died of a heart attack during a business trip), George's mother made the decision to move with her children to her own homeland, the USA and specifically Indiana.
"It was a difficult day when I lost my father, unfortunately I remember it. I learned the news and from then on I knew that I had to be strong for my siblings and for my mother. He had gone to Kos for work, as soon as we learned the news, okay. My mother told me, it was very difficult for her. Instinctively I felt that I was now the man of the family, no one told me. I wanted to help my mother mainly. When we made the decision to go to America, it was very difficult. I think my mother wanted to go to America from the beginning, her family was there, we wanted a new beginning," he had said in an interview about this transition.
In Greece, the young Karlaftis played polo and soccer. In fact, he had competed with the Greek national water polo team as a goalkeeper, winning the bronze medal in an international tournament in Belgrade, as well as with Panathinaikos.
“I started to get really good at polo and playing with kids who were older and older. I was playing with the men’s team when I was 13. My dad pushed me into it,” he had said in an earlier interview.
After moving to the United States, he also took up basketball and track and field, specifically shot put and relay.
He played college football at Purdue and the accolades began, until he was selected by the Kansas City Chiefs in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, specifically at No. 30.
“Football started for me when we moved. I didn’t want to play at first, I was a little hesitant because a lot of things happened, but I had coaches and teammates who convinced me to do it more for the social aspect. I started to believe that I was bigger, stronger and faster than these kids and I thought I couldn’t be bad at this game. I just kept getting better. I was going to camps with kids from all over the country and they were supposed to be the top kids, but I thought I was doing really well. I was still pretty new to the game, so I knew I had to push myself,” the young Greek defensive end had said in an interview.
Two-time champion
In 2023, he became only the second Greek, after Chris Marangos, to win the Super Bowl, and won the NFL championship.
In 2024, playing again in the Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs, he became the first Greek to win the championship for the second time in a row. He even celebrated with the Greek flag.
Kansas City and Giorgos Karlaftis agreed last year to a four-year extension of their cooperation, with the 25-year-old Greek defender signing a new contract worth 93 million dollars, approximately 85.6 million euros, including bonuses, with 57 million euros guaranteed.
His post in 2023 was also legendary, when he went to his team's match in Germany, not in his own appearance but in a specially ordered Panathinaikos jersey that read "Super Bowl Champion" on the front and a... Terkenlis tsoureki in his hand. In fact, the caption of the photo read in Greek: "With the tsoureki in hand".
Besides, his love for Panathinaikos is well-known and declared: "Panathinaikos! Always. All day. Gate 13, come on, friend. The first clothes I put on when they were born were Panathinaikos. Green and white, friend", he has said.
In 2023, after his first championship, he was welcomed at the Maximos Mansion by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis:
He himself has said that when he won the championship he was thinking about his father:
Who is his wife
27-year-old Kaia Harris is now the -wife- of George Karlaftis. They have been together for the last nine years, since school.
He has revealed that they have been together for 15 years.
The wedding in Glyfada
Georgos Karlaftis got married in his homeland, Greece, honoring his roots uh, his father and the place he loves.
The wedding took place last Saturday at One&Only in Glyfada and for this wedding many of his teammates traveled to Greece.
Among them was Travis Kelce and the absolute superstar Taylor Swift. The couple, who is also preparing to get married in the near future, arrived in Greece by private plane. They were previously in London and their presence in Athens was covered in secrecy. The fact that the couple who were getting married had asked not to post on social media also helped superstar Taylor Swift to spend her evening freely dancing and having fun. In footage published by ERT, she seems to be having fun.
