The Acropolis Rally returned as a WRC-sanctioned event to Greece this week, eight years after the country was left off the line-up.
The WRC’s return to Greece was punctuated by the first-ever special stage through the center of Athens, an event that attracted the attention of local motorsports fans and offered backdrops of the Greek capital for international promotion.
The rally will also be live-streamed.
The race, officially named the ΕΚΟ Acropolis Rally of Gods 2021, was inaugurated by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Thursday afternoon, who raised the Greek flag for the first race car at the starting line, with seven-time world champion Sébastien Ogier behind the wheel.
Mitsotakis also watched the first special stage, the Cosmote 5G Athens Stage, which passed through Syntagma Square, and after first meeting with FIA President Jean Todt.
“We’re very happy that we brought back the Acropolis Rally, which returned and is here to stay… It (event) should have never left; it was a result of the (economic) crisis, which we are leaving behind; as we’re looking to better days the Acropolis Rally is back,” the Greek premier said.
