Coach Santos Angers Soccer Community
Greek National Team coach Fernando Santos has irritated various members of the soccer community, after commenting that some of his athletes valued personal gains over following guidance, during their final World Cup match.
During a Portuguese radio interview yesterday, the same day his contract expired, Santos claimed that instead of promoting teamwork, certain players were more interested in individual successes.
Panathinaikos President Yiannis Alafouzos stated of Santos via Twitter, "He is blaming the players for the elimination. It's a shame he did not use the talented young players at his disposal instead of being stuck in his ways".
Greek sports media outlet gazette.gr also voiced their criticism of the coach, "Santos, why did you have to spoil everything right at the end?". Santos departed to Portugal from Brazil, before the team was scheduled to attend their farewell World Cup dinner.
As reported by Kathimerini, the National Team coach stated to Radio Noticias, "We had two or three players more interested in being remembered as the man to score a historic goal for Greece...It concerned them more to score than the correct circulation of the ball, leading to many mistakes and us losing possession". Fernando Santos has been Greece's coach for the last four years.
