The Greek island adored by the Spanish media: “It hides the mystery of Homer’s tomb”
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
The authenticity, the rich history of thousands of years and the culture of a Greek island are highlighted by the Spanish travel magazine Viajar through a series of tributes.
The author of the article, who visited Ios at the invitation of the Municipality, was impressed by the different “faces” of the destination and was fascinated by the mystery of Homer’s ancient tomb.
The tribute by Spain’s largest travel magazine with millions of readers internationally, “explains” the uniqueness of the destination through a look back at its impressive evolution, emphasizing that “Ios guards the spot where, according to legend, the tomb of the creator of the Odyssey and the Iliad is located.
Between secluded beaches, Venetian castles and paths leading to archaeological “treasures”, the island combines its mythical aura with the authenticity of a Cycladic island waiting for the “initiates” to discover it. Despite its proximity to Santorini, Ios has followed a slower and more familiar path.
The island became a magnet for young people who crave fun, filled with a positive aura and youthful energy that is preserved to this day, while at the same time passing the baton to new, invaluable experiences. An impressive new addition is the Gaiti-Simossi Museum that harmoniously “marries” the breathtaking view of the Aegean with painting, sculpture and aesthetics.
Furthermore, hiking plays a vital role as it connects Chora with the interior of the island, highlights the wonderful nature and reveals treasures such as the picturesque chapels and the prehistoric settlement of Skarkos, which has survived since the 3rd millennium BC and constitutes a living "bridge" to the unknown past.
The Viajar website, which is the fifth most important travel website in the world, included Ios in another popular tribute on the Cyclades that was read by millions of travelers.
"Facing modern challenges, our goal through new projects is to continuously improve the quality of Ios for our residents and visitors," says the Mayor of Ios, Gikas Gikas.
