Sandy Aftermath Brings Subway Repairs

  • Written by

The New York MTA is gearing up for its next round of subway repairs, due to the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

The A, C and F trains running between Manhattan and Brooklyn will be affected. The exact timeframe and detour plans are yet to be determined, regarding overhauls. However, improvements can't begin until an enormous 14-month reconstruction of the R train's Montague tube is in place.

MTA CEO and Chairman Tom Prendergast described the repairs,"By and large, it's going fairly well. But it's a one-off. So we're learning an awful lot about what can be done, what can't be done, how can we do it better". This phase of construction won't be constant but will affect weekend schedules.

The MTA's preliminary repair budget is over $50 million dollars, due to the destruction of vital subway equipment from Sandy's salty waters. Prendergast added, "When the tunnels were emptied, there had been tremendous damage to their infrastructure. The sad truth is they have to do this".
