Man Arrested During Boston Marathon's 1 Year Anniversary
Kevin "Kayvon" Edison was arrested near the Boston Marathon's finishing mark yesterday, on the one-year anniversary of the bombings.
The 25-year-old man was carrying a rice cooker in a backpack and has been admitted to a state psychiatric ward, for further evaluations. Edison had a scheduled Boston Municipal Court appearance today, concerning charges of possession of a fake explosive device, threatening battery, threats to commit a crime, disturbing the peace and public assembly, and disorderly conduct; he pleaded not guilty.
Edison is a resident of Wakefield and is being held on a $100,000 bail. His attorney refused to comment outside the courthouse. The criminal was arrested late yesterday, after a police officer observed him walking suspiciously barefoot in the middle of a street in a rainstorm. CBS Boston reported that he was chanting "Boston Strong" as he strolled down the road. The young man dumped the backpack after telling the officer what it held; later the backpack was confiscated and destroyed.
Edison's family issued the following statement, "Our family is so sorry and emotionally overwhelmed by the events at the finish line of the Boston Marathon yesterday. To have this happen on the one year anniversary of such a horrific crime is unfathomable. Our son Kevin has been battling mental issues for several years. His illness has caused himself and our family years of anguish that is unimaginable. We wish the runners of the Boston Marathon on Patriots Day a wonderful and celebratory day. Run Strong and enjoy your wonderful feeling as you cross that finish line".
