Turkey: Hagia Sophia is not maintained - Piece of the dome fell next to pilgrims
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
The poor or even non-existent maintenance of the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul is coming to the surface again.
A Turkish website published a video allegedly taken in 2022 showing a large chunk falling from the dome and splashing a meter away from pilgrims, who fled in fear.
For a long time, experts have been "shouting" that Hagia Sophia is in danger of collapsing due to non-existent maintenance. Pieces of the ceiling are constantly falling and they estimate that this is a result of the humidity, thus reopening the debate about the lack of maintenance. In fact, experts express fears that Hagia Sophia is in danger of collapsing in a major earthquake.
They emphasize that the falling of plaster is due to the moisture created by the crowd, even by the breathσ of the faithful. It needs total restoration, they emphasize, as the dome is in danger of falling at some point
