Turkish EU Minister & Chief Negotiator Comments on Biden's Cypriot Visit

  • Written by

Turkish news agency CIHAN reported that Turkey's EU Minister and Chief Negotiator Mevlut Cavusoglu, remarked on American Vice President Joe Biden's travels to Cyprus.

Cavusoglu confirmed that Turkey wants an equitable peace solution for the island. As Parikiaki states, "There are many elements like the property, the borders, and the missing people. We want all these important issues to be included in the framework of a plan with a win-win formula, where everyone is winning. There is the joint statement by the leaders of February. If you try to negotiate every issue individually, then the negotiation process will stretch. Some issues are easier, some issues are more difficult."

The Turkish EU Minister and Chief Negotiator also discussed his nation's opinion, that all concerns must be agreed upon within a plan's framework, under a mandated time period. He further commented that Turkey wants to achieve a resolution supported by the United Nations and European Union. However, solutions must be first discussed by the two territories of Cyprus and then in the UN, with Greece and Turkey participating.

Mevlut Cavusoglu added that he believes Vice President Biden's Cypriot visit is valuable, but that it won't amount to anything concrete. The Turkish delegate completed his remarks on CIHAN, by stating that Biden's intention is to promote Cyprus' peace process.
