Turkey Ready to Find Cypriot Solution
Turkish Cypriot newspaper Havadis reported today, that Turkish Deputy Prime Minister handling Cyprus Besir Atalay, declared that Turkey now wants to find a solution to the Cyprus divide.
According to Parikiaki, the Prime Minister stated to the Turkish news portal, "Turkey's contribution in the recently began process", that can be aided by the EU and United States. He commented of U.S. Vice President Biden's recent trip to the island, "He did not put forward very concrete things, but in the end it [the visit] could be evaluated as a contribution in the negotiating process".
Atalay claimed that Turkish Cypriots and Turkey have consistently held a "constructive role" for a solution and have vied for one, yet the Greek Cypriots have not. He believes that the current and ongoing United Nations supported discussions between both sides offer additional hope, due to the positive role that the global arena is now offering. He stated that Turkish Cypriot rights and equality have to be preserved in the final outcome.
When asked about natural gas resources on the island, Atalay declared, "...We believe that the entire island should use all the possibilities, the wealth that exists around this island. For both sides of the island. There is no other way than Turkey for the use of the wealth which could be developed there, for carrying it to Europe. The current developments in Ukraine showed that the most important basin and center on the issue of distributing this wealth is Turkey...Turkey has a serious accumulation of knowledge on this point. If there is going to be a development here in Cyprus' basin, in the Mediterranean, Turkey will always undertake this role...".
