Istanbul's Greek Daily Newspaper Shuts Down
The Greek Apoyevmatini newspaper based out of Turkey, has announced its closing due to financial strains, according to the Daily Sabah.
The paper was established in 1925 and is published daily in Istanbul. Its mission was to cover news concerning the Greek community in Turkey. Currently, Mihail Vasiliadis serves as its owner and sole employee; the media portal used to employee 35 workers.
Apoyevmatini had operated from funds from the Greek government and Turkey's Greek population. The newspaper was plagued with setbacks, resulting from Greece's financial crisis and the dwindling population of Greeks who live in Istanbul. 1,700 Greeks currently reside in Turkey.
Vasiliadis described, "They say it is necessary to have a high circulation rate to receive advertisements. There are only 605 Greek families in Istanbul. I sell 600 copies daily and reach almost 99 percent of them. However, that is not enough". The Greek daily used to distribute 30,000 copies.
