Enterprise Greece Prez: Our goal is to make Greece a model of sustainable tourism

The government's goal to make Greece a model of sustainable tourism, to improve its image and to further upgrade the Greece brand was highlighted by the Secretary of State for International Economic Relations and External Affairs  and president of Enterprise Greece, Ioannis Smyrlis, at the conference "Hellenic tourism: a national affair. Possibilities and perspectives", organized in Athens.

Greek Fin. Min. in New York for Capital Link

The Minister of Finance, Mr. Christos Staikouras, is in New York since yesterday, Wednesday, December 7th until Friday, December 9th, in order to participate in the annual Capital Link Investment Conference, entitled "24th Annual Capital Link Invest in Greece Forum" and to make contacts with representatives of investment and banking groups.

Roma riot around Greece in protest of shooting of 16-year-old

The mobilizations of the Roma are overflowing withg anger due to the serious shooting injury of a 16-year-old man by police, in Thessaloniki.

Rioting also took place on Wednesday, for the third consecutive day, in various regions of the country. Among other things, the presence of the Roma was dynamic in Megara and Aspropyrgos, where they lit fires and threw objects.

In fact, due to the objects falling on the new Athens-Corinth National Highway, traffic was temporarily stopped in both directions between the 39th and 42nd km at approximately 8:00 p.m.

Also, a train stopped in Aspropyrgos, while there were delays in the routes of the Suburban Railway. According to a relevant announcement from the railway, "due to a fire near the tracks in the area of Aspropyrgos, by order of the fire department, train 1327 stopped at Ano Liosion station and train 1326 at Aspropyrgos station. Delays are expected on the suburban bus routes."

Looting tires, burning shops

Tires were looted from a store in Aspropyrgos, while a little later the store was torched.

Late on Wednesday night, a message was sent from 112 to the residents of the surrounding areas, which stated: "If you are on NATO Avenue, Aspropyrgos area, take refuge in a closed building now. A fire has broken out in an outdoor tire warehouse. Smokes hazardous to health are emitted. Close doors and windows."

Bus fire and road blocks

At the same time, a group of people set fire to a city bus in Menidi, which was totally destroyed. There were no passengers inside the bus.

Roma proceeded to a new blockade of the old Thessaloniki-Veria national road, at the height of Chalcedon. The gathered, set up barricades and set tires on fire.

Also, around 100 Roma blocked the old Kalamata-Athens highway from Wednesday afternoon. The blockade took place at the height of Ariochori and those gathered lit fires and hung banners. The presence of police officers is discreet, with vehicle traffic being (temporarily) conducted by bypass roads.

An atmosphere of tension in the area of Agios Dimitrios, in Agrinio, with around 50 gathered who set fire to waste bins and tires, while they closed the Antirrio – Ioannina highway at the same point, with the result that vehicle traffic is temporarily conducted by bypass roads. Late in the evening, when the gathered left, the fire brigade extinguished the fires, while the national road was reopened to traffic.

Lloyd's List: The Greek Shipping Awards 2022

The current and former president of the Union of Greek Shipowners were both recognized with important awards on Friday, December 2, at the Lloyd's List Hellenic Shipping Awards for 2022, in front of over 1,000 guests from the shipping industry.

Melina Travlou, who earlier this year was elected the first female president of the EEE, was named Greek Maritime Personality of the Year. Ms Travlou was revealed as the winner of the award minutes after the Lloyd's List/Propeller Club Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to her predecessor, Theodoros Veniamis, who led the country's shipbuilding community for 13 years until his retirement in 2022.

Other notable individual awards included the Newsmaker of the Year award to shipowner Haris Vafias, for a long list of notable activities, including the launch of a second Nasdaq-listed shipping company, Imperial Petroleum.

Dorothea Ioannou of the American P&I Club was revealed as the International Personality of the Year after becoming the first woman to lead an International Club in its 167 years of existence.

The Next Generation in Shipping Award was won by Antonis Malaxianakis, founder and CEO of Harbor Lab, a technology startup that provides innovative software focused on port costs for ships.

In a greeting, the Minister of Shipping and Insular Policy Ioannis Plakiotakis congratulated the candidates as well as the winners of the 2022 Awards.

The annual awards recognize achievements and commendable activity in Greek shipping and promote Greece as a shipping hub. The winners are selected by an independent panel of judges representing a wide range of the Greek maritime community.


The 2022 winners

- Melina Travlou was voted as the Personality of the Hellenic Shipping of the year for 2022.

-Thodoris E. Veniamis was honored with the Lloyd's List/Propeller Club Lifetime Achievement Award for a highly successful shipping career that began nearly 50 years ago.

-The Newsmaker of the Year award was given to Haris Vafias, CEO of StealthGas and Imperial Petroleum.

-Antonis Malaxianakis won the Next Generation in Shipping Award, which is open to personalities up to the age of 40.

- Dorothea Ioannou, CEO of the management company of the American P&I Club, was elected International Personality of the Year.

- Dry Cargo Company of the Year was declared Ionic Bulk Carriers, managing a modern fleet of 14 bulk carriers.

-As Tanker Company of the Year, the jury chose Andriaki Shipping, the tanker management company founded by the N J Goulandris Group, now in its 70th year.

-Levante Ferries was awarded as Passenger Company of the Year.

-BRS Group Athens Ltd won the Shipbroker of the Year Award.

-The Financier of the Year Award in Greek Shipping was awarded to the Athens Stock Exchange.

-Dr. Christos Leontopoulos of ABS was awarded the Technical Achievement Award.

-Load Line Marine won the Safety Award.

-Polygreen won the Sustainability Award.

-Technava won this year's prestigious award of Piraeus: International Maritime Center.

-Captain Kimonas Christodoulou, captain of the tanker "Christina" of Sun Enterprises for rescuing 27 refugees from a small boat in the Aegean in August 2022, was declared Sailor of the Year.

-Project Connect, which operates the Adopt-A-Ship program in Greek schools, was named the winner of the 2022 Education or Training Award.

-The prize of the ship of the year was awarded to "Aero 1, 2, 3", the newly built catamarans of the Attica Group, which are now in Saronic from this year.

-The Lloyd’s List Intelligence Big Data Award was awarded to HiLo.
