Storm floods Athens, destroys Nikaia
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
Today's storm caught Athenians, and authorities, once again, unprepared. In Nikaia, a suburb of Piraeus, the stream traversing the suburb flooded and swept away cars, flooding the suburb, with images presenting scenes of biblical destruction.
At the corner of Valaoritou and 25 March streets the flood swept twenty to thirty cars into a pile up.
The landscape of destruction was replete with flooded shops, basements and ground floor dwellings, with many shopkeepers speaking of damage to the tune of up to 100,000 euros.
Irate citizens report that water reached to a height of 70cm, and they blame the municipality of Piraeus for not cleaning drainage grates, and for works promised but never implemented.
