Rolling Demonstrations Paralyze Athens Center All Day

Athens was fraught with demonstrations, again today, as pensioners, shipyard workers, disabled persons, teachers and supporters of imprisoned Kurds holding a hunger strike bore down on different ministries and parliament.

Pensioners demonstrated in the morning ending up in front of the health ministry. There they were angered by the absence of health minister Adonis Georgiadis, although they met with deputy minister Zeta Makri and recounted their grievances. Pensioners, also demonstrated in other major cities across the country.

Workers from Skaramangas shipyards, also demonstrated, meeting briefly the pensioner's procession at Omonia square, after which they headed for parliament. They were demanding the continued operation of the shipyards with no layoffs, under government control. However, they did not meet with the prime minister, as they had been promised.

Meanwhile, the organization for disabled persons marched on the employment and finance ministries, where they met with deputy employment minister Vasilis Kegeroglou, and finance minister Yannis Stournaras and decried the condition of their finances.

Finally teachers and supporters of Kurds imprisoned in Greece on hunger strike against their possible extradition to other countries on outstanding warrants, met at the University of Athens rectory building, at 18.00 pm and marched on parliament, dispersing two and a half hours later.
