PASOK Cadre Facing Charges over State Secrets

Former PASOK MP, Mihalis Karhimakis if facing charges of complicity in violating state secret acts, and will face Dimitris Foukas, the prosecutor handling the wire-tapping case, on 8 November.

According to reports in the press, the former minister will defend himself against the charges after a spot check at his office and home, authorities found confidential state documents dated , mainly, between 2005 and 2007. The documents came to his hands from a former employee of intelligence agency EYP.

The case against Mr. Karhimakis was opened after a denunciation by another EYP employee that stated to prosecuting authorities that in a meeting with EYP personnel, the former minister turned to another employee and said "You haven't brought me any of those juicy documents, recently."

After the joining of the cases for wiretapping and the alleged plot to murder then prime minister Kostas Karamanlis, the prosecution decided to lodge a new request for judicial assistance, after new evidence surfaced from a significant deposition.

The source that appeared in front of the prosecutor stated information concerning a foreign national that was in Greece between 1997 and 2010, under a cover using an alias, and organized a system for wiretapping.
