Western Attica and Kineta are facing serious problems due to the Girionis storm front.
The Fire Department received dozens of calls during the night for pumping water and evacuating people from vehicles and homes, mainly in the area of Kineta, west of Athens where the biggest problem was identified. The General Secretariat for Civil Protection even temporarily closed the Suburban Railway line from Kiato to Piraeus and vice versa, however, just before 08:00 the services were operating normally. It should be noted that around 08:00, the Minister of Citizen Protection, Michalis Chrysochoidis arrived on site.
Athens-Corinth highway closed due to bad weather
Due to bad weather, the river Pikka in Corinth flooded, causing the water to reach the height of the Athens - Corinth Highway. GS Civil Protection was forced to halt traffic at the 61st km for safety reasons, as overflow materials moved to the Kineta area. Because of the mud slide, as Civil Defense Secretary Nikos Chardalias told SKAI, people were trapped in their homes and risked their lives. "There have been 27 unblockings and 13 water pumps," he said characteristically.
At the same time, the traffic on the old highway was stopped and individual residents were ordered to be ready if they were asked to evacuate their homes, from Eleusis to Kalamaki.
