Seven killed in central Evia from severe weather

The search for the 72-year-old man who has been missing since yesterday morning, after the catastrophic floods in Evia, continued all night.
The severe weather, which claimed the lives of seven people, including an infant, caused biblical destruction in villages and settlements of central Evia. At night, the emergency plan was launched to locate the 72-year-old who was swept away by the water and was missing. The man in question, as reported by the Coast Guard, from the momentum of the water ended up in the sea, in the area of Lefkanti.
The investigations of the Coast Guard are carried out with the participation of two patrol boats, three private boats, threepatrol vehicles. from land, and two teams of divers, while during the day yesterday, a Coast Guard helicopter, as well as a Hellenic Air Force helicopter.
Evia: Seven dead, among them an infant and a married couple
The unbelievably severe weather brought untold grief as seven people, including an 8-month-old baby, lost their lives.
Initially in the morning it became known that an 86-year-old and an 88-year-old were found dead, with the 88-year-old's house being inundated by the mud that reached a height of two meters. The two elderly people lived in the Politika area, which was hit mercilessly by the bad weather. The rushing waters swept away vehicles, while the houses were turned into swamps, as they were filled with mud and water.
Shortly after the news of the death of the two elderly people, another tragedy became known, as in the same area an 8-month-old baby lost his life.
The floods swept away cars and threw them into homes
As the day went on, the tragedy was being revealed, as the victims had reached seven by nightfall. Two more people in Bourtzi, as well as two others in the area of Amfithea. In Amphithea, a 38-year-old woman was found dead outside her home, while a few hours later her husband, who was the seventh victim, was found dead inside.
Fire Department: 664 calls, 97 cases of assistance
The disaster was huge throughout central Evia, with the fire brigade failing to receive calls from trapped citizens. According to its latest update, it received 664 calls, while in 97 cases it had to help and remove people who were in danger. Rescuers were trying in every way to free the frightened residents in central Evia
The announcement of the fire brigade:
"Following previous information regarding the floods that occurred in the early morning hours today, August 9, 2020 in Central Evia, the Fire Service has received 664 calls, most of which concern water pumping.
To date, a total of 97 evacuation assistance services have been provided to people who have been transported to safe places from vehicles and homes, namely:
The fire brigade has carried out 82 evacuations of persons, of which: 54 evacuations by ground means and 28 more with 1 SAR helicopter and
The Joint Search and Rescue Coordination Center (EKSED) has carried out 15 evacuations of people with 2 SAR helicopters.
