PM Mitsotakis to meet with Cyprus President Christodoulides in Nicosia
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is making his first visit to Cyprus on Monday after his re-election.
He is expected to meet in Nicosia with the president of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides and discuss issues of common interest in which Athens and Nicosia cooperate and coordinate their actions, such as the Cyprus issue, relations with Turkey, Euro-Turkish relations, energy, migration and tripartite cooperation schemes.
Special focus will be placed on the Cyprus issue. Greece's constant pursuit is the end of the Turkish occupation and the reunification of Cyprus through a functional and sustainable solution, based on the decisions of the United Nations Security Council and the EU acquis. Athens and Nicosia are in constant coordination at all levels and the efforts of President Christodoulides to restart negotiations within the framework of the UN resolutions have the support of the Greek government.
In matters related to energy, the strategies for further upgrading the role of the two countries as hubs for the uninterrupted supply of Europe are expected to be discussed.
The two leaders will discuss the possibilities of further exploiting tripartite cooperation and ways to deal with migration flows, given that Athens and Nicosia work closely together as frontline EU member states and actively participate in the consultations on the new migration and asylum pact.
Mitsotakis will also meet with the president of the House of Representatives, Annita Demetriou.
