How Greek government sees Trump's election - The prophetic Mitsotakis-Pompeo meeting

Featured How Greek government sees Trump's election - The prophetic Mitsotakis-Pompeo meeting

Government sources express the belief that Greek-American relations “have deep roots and will not be disrupted by the change of leadership in the White House.”

At the same time, they note that strong relations have been cultivated with the Republican camp and individuals who are expected to play a strong role in the new era.

Mr. Mitsotakis was among the first leaders to congratulate Mr. Trump on his victory via Twitter, stating that “Greece expects a deepening of strategic cooperation between the two countries,” wanting to send a message of continuity in the policy that has been outlined in recent years. A few 24 hours before the polls opened in America, the Prime Minister noted to his interlocutors that his first visit to the White House was during Mr. Trump’s first term and that is when the security agreement between the two countries began to develop.

The meeting with Pompeo was no coincidence
The election of Trump, after all, did not surprise the government, as they considered him the favorite to win. According to the prime minister's associates, the meeting he had a few days ago in Athens with Mike Pompeo, Trump's defense minister, who is tipped for a strong position in the new government, is no coincidence, nor is the working meeting he had with Republican senators at his home in Chania, in the presence of Defense Minister Nikos Dendias. At the time of yesterday's morning coffee, Mr. Trump's victory had not yet been confirmed, however, the image on the other side of the Atlantic was that it would be a sweeping victory, as it turned out. Naturally, the discussion revolved around the changes that may occur in the foreign policy of the United States, with the belief that these will not concern the treatment of Greece.

Greek-American relations are excellent - What about Greek-Turkish relations?
"The scope of cooperation is such and the relations are so good that American diplomacy will not change its stance," note associates of Mr. Mitsotakis. In the field of Greek-Turkish relations, the same sources estimate that support for dialogue and the normalization of relations between the two countries will continue. Regarding the discussion taking place around the "special relationship that Mr. Trump maintains with Mr. Erdogan", they point out that it "distorts reality and omits the real facts", as they recall that Mr. Trump was the one who excluded Ankara from the F-35 program and imposed sanctions due to the acquisition of the S-400.
