Sky News: Three “private meetings” between Mitsotakis and the British Museum administration regarding the Parthenon Sculptures

Sky News reported on three “private meetings” between Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis and the chairman and three members of the board of directors of the British Museum regarding the return of the Parthenon Sculptures n Monday morning, a day before the Greek Prime Minister’s meeting with his British counterpart.
The British website also reports what a source close to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer told the Financial Times: “We are open to whatever is agreed. We can say that there is no clear view on what should happen.”
As Sky News notes, unlike Rishi Sunak, who in 2023 canceled his meeting with Kyriakos Mitsotakis due to what the Greek Prime Minister had supported regarding the Parthenon Sculptures, the current British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, “is believed to be more open to a return of the Sculptures than his predecessor.”
For its part, the British Museum declined to comment on the information about the informal meetings, with its spokesman contenting himself with the fact that discussions with the Greek government about a collaboration are ongoing.
“This could mean that a loan agreement between the British Museum and the Greek government could be in the works - paving the way for some of the most important cultural monuments to return to Greece, more than 200 years after they were taken out of the country,” reports Sky News.
“However, for this to happen, Greece would have to agree to lend it an antiquity that it believes belongs to it, which means that challenges remain,” concludes the article of the British website.
