Mitsotakis on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

"The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is nothing more than an occasion for us all to feel that we are at their side. At the side of our mother, wife, daughter or friend who needs help. Of the unknown woman passing by. And of every woman who is called upon to overcome shame and fear in order to stand boldly against them," Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in a post on Tuesday.
"On its part, the State is responding to this scourge with 63 Domestic Violence Offices. With trained police officers. Also, with 44 Counseling Centres and 20 Shelters. With the counselling line 15900. As well as with the Panic Button that has already been installed on hundreds of mobile phones across the country.
So far, 20,000 complaints of abuse have led to 13,000 arrests. Women, therefore, trust the state and resist. But repression alone is not enough. Especially since in our time, violence is unfortunately also spreading to the digital sphere with various forms of harassment. Often anonymous. But always painful.
Our goal is a strong protection net at the roots and core of society. In the family, in the school and in the neighbourhood. With mutual respect as a model. But, above all, with zero tolerance for anyone who belittles women. This is, therefore, a permanent debt that concerns all of us. Because violence is never a private matter," the prime minister concluded in his post for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
