Tear Gas Ushers In Week of Protests
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
A week of mass mobilizations against staff mobility and availability in the public sector began with tension, as school guards besieging the government reform ministry clashed with riot police. Police used tear gas to drive away the protesters, resulting in two people being taken to hospital with respiratory complications.
Secondary school teachers began rolling five day strikes, starting today, and conducted a rally at the Athens University building in downtown Athens, joined by civil servants who walked off their jobs at 11.30 am.
Primary school teachers will also be striking on Wednesday and Thursday along with civil servants.
Private school teachers are also on strike Monday and Tuesday, while universities remain closed in protest of mobility transfers of administrative staff.
Five day rolling strikes have also paralyzed social security funds, employment agency OAED, and many services of the labor ministry.
The health sector will also be disrupted as hospital doctors begin a three day strike on Tuesday and are joined by state hospital staff for two days of strikes starting on Wednesday
