Syntagma Square's Symbolic Actions
In a symbolic action of overcoming the Greek financial crisis, Syntagma Square's marble stones have been reset and Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras' six floor windows has been replaced.
Both areas of Parliament were damaged by protestors and law enforcers, during the last four years of rioting.
The Finance Minister stated of the act, "I changed the window because I decided this era has ended". Prior to last week's bond sale, the nation suffered severe financial hardships, which resulted in the desecration of Syntagma Square and surrounding areas of national Parliament.
Athenian Mayor George Kaminis stated, "We cannot surrender to fatalism...We have to promote Athens". Athens city proper contains 664,000 residents, while over a third of Greece's total population reside in the greater metropolitan area, and total 3.8 million people.
According to Kathimerini, Syntagma-routed bus driver Yiannis Vassiliou explained, "Tourists don't want to see this, they come for the sun and the Acropolis...Syntagma is very clean now and that's important because it's what a tourist arriving from outside sees first. We can't lose our smile, even if we're feeling other things inside. It's our trademark".
