The European Court of Human Rights Fines Greece
Today, the European Court of Human Rights determined that Greece has to compensate 6,500 euros to two Dominican Republic individuals.
The two women filed a grievance against their detention before being evacuated from the country. Angela de la Cruz and Mariana de los Santos were arrested for illegally entering Greece, and were detained at the Department for Illegal Immigration in August 2011.
Their case claims that their prison cell was overpopulated, while their 5.87 daily allowance was not enough to cover proper meals. It also stated that their transfer to the Aliens Directorate of Attica the following month placed the two in dirty housing, with only one shower and toilet for all illegal female immigrants. The European Court of Human Rights sided with the two women, and decided that they were forced to live in demeaning and inhumane circumstances.
