Pericles' Wine Cup Identified in Kifissia

  • Written by

A ceramic wine cup considered to have been used by Pericles, was located in Kifissia at a paupers grave, as reported by local Greek media today.

The cup was identified at a construction site and was broken into twelve pieces, as reported by Ta Nea. Archeologists pieced it back together and determined that "Pericles" and five other name were etched under the cup's handle, including his brother's name "Ariphron".

Speaking to Ta Nea, Greek Epigraphic Society Secretary Angelos Matthaiou described, "The name Ariphron is extremely rare...Having it listed above that of Pericles makes us 99 per cent sure that these are the two brothers."

Matthaiou believes that the saucer was probably used by Pericles during his twenties, at a wine conference where the men inscribed their names on it. He commented, "They were definitely woozy, as whoever wrote Pericles' name made a mistake and had to correct it."

Archeologist Galini Daskalaki believes that the cup was later given to Drapetis and said, "This is a rare find, a genuine glimpse into a private moment". The ceramic wine cup is set to be exhibited at the Epigraphical Museum in Athens in the fall, according to AFP.
