How much do foreign tourists spend on holidays in Greece - Americans are biggest spenders

As for the whole of last year, the country welcomed 35.95 million visitors who spent a total of 21.59 billion euros, with the average expenditure per tourist being 600.60 euros, according to data processed by INSETE Intelligence based on data from the Civil Aviation Authority and Athens International Airport.
German tourists held the first place both in terms of visitor volume and total expenditure, with 5.40 million visitors leaving 3.70 billion euros in the Greek economy. Their average expenditure amounted to 685.33 euros per person, confirming Germany as the most important tourist market for Greece.
In second place were the British with 4.55 million visitors who spent 3.16 billion euros, i.e. an average of 695.24 euros each. Despite the challenges of Brexit, the United Kingdom maintained its strong presence in Greek tourism.
Italian tourists followed with 2.03 million arrivals and total spending of €1.23 billion, spending an average of €604.96 per visit. The French, with 1.99 million visitors, contributed €1.26 billion to tourism revenues, with an average spending of €632.18 per person.
American tourists, although fewer in number with 1.55 million visitors, had the highest purchasing power, spending an average of €1,023.77 each and contributing €1.58 billion to total revenues.
Russia, despite geopolitical constraints, recorded 16,112 visitors who spent 15.69 million euros, with a high average spend of 974.01 euros per tourist.
Receipts skyrocket
Regarding the most important countries of origin of travelers from the euro zone, receipts from Germany increased by 15.5% and amounted to 183.3 million euros. Receipts from France decreased by 20.3% and amounted to 78.2 million euros, while receipts from Italy also fell by 44.5%, which amounted to 33.7 million euros.

Among other countries, receipts from the United Kingdom increased by 27.9%, which amounted to 95.8 million euros, as did those from the USA, which increased by 81.0% and amounted to 181.7 million euros. Finally, receipts from Russia also increased, reaching 0.4 million euros.
Germans in first place
Germany remained in first place in ranking of countries, based on the number of visits in 2024, with 5.67 million visits, showing an increase of +12.9% compared to 2023.
In second place remained the United Kingdom with 4.69 million visits, although it recorded a decrease of -3.3%. In third place remained Bulgaria with 2.96 million visits, showing a small increase of +1.9%. The majority of the Regions showed an increase in the number of visits, with the largest percentage increase recorded in the North Aegean Region (+40.1%) followed by the Epirus Region with (+19.8%).
The number of visits (39.35 million) is higher than the number of visitors, which in 2024 amounted to 35.95 million (+9.8% compared to 2023).
Athens
In Athens, the situation is equally encouraging. Based on data from the Athens-Attica and Argosaronic Hotel Association (EXAAA), the number of 10 million visitors does not seem like an ultimate goal but a visible achievement, provided that there is further improvement in infrastructure.
