Surprise: Athens is the top choice for car-free vacations - And here are the reasons
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
Athens has been named the top choice for car-free vacations by the hospitality company Accor.
The residents of Athens, may find the city chaotic, full of traffic and noise, but it seems that the data says otherwise.
Hospitality company Accor collected data on cities across Europe. It analyzed factors such as the percentage of the center that is pedestrian-friendly, the variety and affordability of public transportation, as well as the proximity of attractions.
Athens, therefore, received the highest score – 99.75 out of 100 – for the ease of exploring it without a car, leaving cities such as Munich, Vienna and Lisbon behind.
Why Athens is the best choice for a car-free holiday
According to Accor, Athens stands out thanks to the pedestrian street that surrounds the Acropolis, but also for the ability to easily walk between its neighborhoods, such as Plaka, Monastiraki and Psirri.
The metro acts as a bonus, not a crutch – and takes you directly from the airport, while the stations appeared at the right time for a coffee. At the same time, the ticket for transportation for a 24 is one of the cheapest in Europe (just 4.1 euros compared to 9.7 euros in Munich). And if you want to go to the sea? Get on a tram and you will arrive in no time.
Immediately after, Munich was in second place, with a score of 97.7, winning thanks to the easy travel to the historic center by train from the airport. There are also plenty of trams to help tourists get around, while the metro is conveniently located for easy access.
Lisbon came in third with a score of 91.28, scoring 1005 for transport variety. The Portuguese capital has a wide range of public transport options – from the metro to boats that take visitors along the Tagus River.
