Today Marks U.S. Tax Return Deadline!
Today marks the deadline for U.S. tax returns!
Many post offices in the Tri-State area and beyond, will offer extended business hours for last-minute tax mailings. The filings must be mailed by today; the U.S. Postal Service stated that the final customer of 2013, was granted an April 15th postmark at approximately 2:00 a.m.
According to a recent study, almost 25% of the U.S. population waits until the last day to file taxes. The IRS penalizes late federal tax returns, but only if an individual owes money, as the late fee is a percentage of what must be paid back. There are an estimated 12 million American taxpayers predicted to ask for extensions. The continuation period is an extra six months to complete tax documents.
According to 1010 WINS, IRS Commissioner John Koskinen stated, "Most people with refunds are filing early in January, February and March because they'd like the refund early...So we don't see an incentive and we don't see much experience of people waiting later for us to keep the money longer."
