Greek-American Politicians Speak Out Against Golden Dawn
Distinguished Greek-Americans in the political sector have recently spoken out against extremely right-winged political party Golden Dawn, who looks to win a seat at the European parliamentary elections this month.
The group of prominent Greek-Americans offered a statement, when called by the World Jewish Congress. The WJC just released its "Neo-Nazism in Modern Europe" report, that discussed Golden Dawn's racist activities.
World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder described, "We thank these Greek American leaders for their strong stand against Golden Dawn, which is little known in America but a looming problem in Greece...We hope their words will influence Greek citizens to reject this hateful, extremist party."
Greek-American Representatives that responded to WJC's call encompassed Republican and Democratic state and federal lawmakers from four states. They include: US Representatives Gus Bilirakis, John Sarbanes, and Dina Titus; New York Senators Michael Gianaris and Dean Skelos and New York Assembly Members Nicole Malliotakis and Aravella Simotas. Former California Treasurer Phil Angelides and businessman Angelo K. Tsakopoulos joined the active politicians. Golden Dawn holds international chapters in New York City, Australia and Italy.
