University of Melbourne Receives 1 Million Dollar Donation Towards Ancient Greek Studies

  • Written by

Melbourne University has recently received a $1 million dollar donation to benefit its new Chair in Classics, that will assist ancient Greek studies.

The funds are part of a University donation totaling $10 million dollars by philanthropist and attorney Allan Meyers. Arts Faculty Dean Mark Considine explained to Neos Kosmos that the funds will solidify a legacy for the educational institution to offer ancient world instruction, specifically of ancient Greece.

The University's Classics and Archaeology Collection currently house more than 2,400 items. Discussing the new Arts building that is scheduled to operate in 2016's second semester, Meyers explained, "if you believe in something, then you must support it...we must do more than just talk, we must invest in the future. Myers has called upon Greek-Australians to assist via donations or promoting its support.

The University of Melbourne along with the Consul General of Greece in Melbourne Christina Simantirakis, will host a panel discussion commemorating the 160th anniversary of Ancient Greek on campus next week.

Considine stated to Neos Kosmos, "The most important part of the event is to try and build stronger connections with the community - we've always enjoyed informal relationships with the community but we haven't had any kind of structure to pursue that relationship in a more organised fashion. This is the first opportunity to showcase parts of the program but also to invite community members and community leaders to give us feedback on their view of what we are doing and their level of interest".
