Unprecedented police repression against protesters at Thessaloniki rally
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
Incidents wreaked havoc at the rally for Macedonia - Police forces did not stop using chemicals even against young children, women and the elderly.
Thessaloniki experienced unprecedented images with extended episodes, while shocking videos from yesterday's gathering that were shown by media showed young children to cry from teargas and women injured on the ground.
Thousands of protesters participated in the rally for Macedonia despite the draconian security measures, but the demonstration was tarnished by the inciodents and the reckless use of chemicals, which had the effect of drowning the city in the tear gas and straining the ambulance service EKAB.
While Alexis Tsipras was on the podium, there was a warfare in progress: Scufflres, tear gas, wounded, crying children, elderly persons being beaten by police and arrests tarnished yesterday's protest, while police held lengthy battles with protesters.
The police forces did not stop using chemicals even against young children and elderly people who participated in the protest against the Prespes agreement or just happened to be passing by the area! Photojournalists covering events for years told the press that what they lived yesterday was unprecedented and that they have never seen such extensive use of chemicals.
Ambulances rescued several people with respiratory problems or injuries. Unknown people caused significant material damage to shops.
Police detained 28 people, of whom 8 were arrested and today are expected to be brought to the prosecutor.
