The operation of the main line of the Thessaloniki metro will be inaugurated in November, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Monday during the presentation of the Metro Extension Study, adding that priority was being given to the coverage of Northwest Thessaloniki.
"In six months from now we will be able to deliver to the citizens of Thessaloniki, but also to the visitors, the most modern, in all probability, and certainly the most beautiful, subway of any European city. And I say this in a city that has been tested a lot by expectations which were refuted in the past. The Thessaloniki Metro is finally becoming a reality," the prime minister pointed out.
The study envisages the construction of two metro lines, with a total length of 48 kilometers with 44 stations, that will cover the entire urban complex of Thessaloniki and the surrounding area and will serve 678,000 passengers daily by 2040.
The prime minister said that discussions about these projects should not be politicized under any circumstances, because, as he observed, "the data will show us where we should go with the metro and with what priority the next projects should be planned."
At the same time, he emphasised that the imprint of the European Union is visible in these projects as well, and this should be considered by the voters who will go to the polls for the European elections on June 9.
