Nigrita Prison Guards' Court Appearance Today
Today, eight Nigrita Prison guards will appear in court, concerning the continuing investigation on 42-year-old Albanian prisoner Ilie Kareli's death.
The inmate is thought to be a torture causality.
Kareli passed away on March 27th, in solitary confinement. He died a couple of hours after being relocated to the Prison from central Greece's Malandrino jail, after fatally stabbing a prison guard.
Nigrita's serving warden H.K. will testify before Serres magistrate Georgia Toutountzi. According to Kathimerini, his attorney Nikos Zindras explained that the Albanian prisoner arrived in severely poor health, upon his Itea police station arrival, before arriving at the Nigrita penitentiary. Police officers verified on trial that he was bruised and cut all over his frame.
An official internal affairs examination confirmed that Ilie Kareli was abused with kicks, punches and whip beatings at Nigrita Prison. The investigation also pinpoints the suspected individual responsible for causing the convict's final blow to his chest. There are seven more prison guards anticipated to testify on Friday.
