Papoulias' Greek Junta 47th Anniversary Statement
President Karolos Papoulias offered a statement today, regarding the 1967 to 1974 Greek junta.
Papoulias explained how the junta cost the nation "valuable time" and transformed the country in reverse. Today marks 47 years, since a Greek Army colonel troop eliminated the democratic process and lined the streets with tankers.
The President commented on the need for the eternal and consistent preservation of democracy. He said of the dictatorship, "...traumatic national experience that cannot be forgotten or whose impact does not lessen as time goes on...On days like this we should remember that democracy was not gifted to us but was won, and that it does not exist without hard work".
