JFK Cocaine Smuggler Arrested

  • Written by

Almost eight pounds of cocaine were found at John F. Kennedy International Airport, after passenger Yudishtir Maharaj attempted to smuggle it to New York.

According to authorities today, the drug was hidden inside frozen meat parcels. Maharaj was arrested on March 20th after arriving to New York via Port of Spain, Trinidad. During a routine U.S. Customs and Border Protection inspection, three large frozen meat packages were found in the criminal's luggage. After a more thorough search, a white powder started permeating through the bundles. The powder was then tested and positively identified as cocaine, resulting in approximately 7.35 pounds of seized drugs, according to officials.

Director of Field Operations New York Robert E. Perez describe the incident, "This latest seizure demonstrates the vigilance of our CBP officers and their excellence in detecting those who would try to smuggle these illegal substances". The drug smuggler has been arrested on federal narcotics smuggling charges. Yudishtir Maharaj's case has since been turned over to the Homeland Security Investigations unit.
