Sewol Ferry Captain Arrested

  • Written by

Today, capsized Sewol ferry captain Lee Joon Suk was served with an arrest warrant.

Two additional crew members far arrest; no additional details are currently available. The cause of the vessel's accident, which left 29 dead and 270 missing, remains to be determined.

A Southern Korean prosecutor claimed that Suk wasn't even in the steering room when the large ferry began to sink. Prosecutor Jae-Eok Park stated,
"It is not clear where (the captain) was when the accident occurred, although it is clear that he was not in the steering room before the actual accident happened".

However, the captain was one of the first to be rescued from the tragic boat. Maritime Law Attorney Jack Hickey commented to CNN: "This captain violated the age-old rule and internationally recognized rule that a captain must stay on the vessel...Pretty much every law, rule, regulation and standard throughout the world says that yes, the captain must stay with the ship until all personnel are safely off of the ship, certainly passengers".

Adding to the crisis, was last night's suicidal hanging by Ansan Danwon High School Vice Principal Kang Min Kyu. The distraught 52-year-old man hung himself from a tree with a belt, near worried relatives of missing students. There haven't been any new advancements in today's search. Family members of the missing are horrified and sullen at the rescue effort's speed and the captain's actions.
