U.S. Treasury Secretary stresses importance of debt relief in meeting with FinMin Tsakalotos
U.S. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew reiterated the importance of Europe following through on its commitment to put Greece's debt on a sustainable path through debt relief, in a meeting with Greek Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos on the sidelines of the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank in the Peruvian capital of Lima between the 9th and 11th of October, Lew's spokesman said on Friday.
The U.S. official also said that Washington continues to monitor closely Greece's financial situation, confirming the importance of continuing the implementation of reforms by the Greek government.
In their first meeting since the September elections in Greece, Lew praised his commitment to finding a constructive way for the country to proceed within the Eurozone, according to the spokesman. He also expressed his concern about the refugee crisis in Europe and conveyed his support for all efforts to prevent further hardship through a comprehensive European response.
