Greek Schools Suffer Teacher Shortages
The Greek Education and Religious Affairs Ministry is scrambling to position as many teachers as it can by the opening day of the coming school year, on September 11th.
The Ministry is preparing to employ 22,500 substitute instructors for primary and secondary schools, to combat the gap in positions due to the large retirement amount of workers in the education sector, according to ANA-MPA.
Deputy Minister Alexandros Dermetzopoulos and Education Minister Andreas Loverdos addressed the parliamentary Standing Committee on Cultural and Educational Affairs and stated that 2013 brought the retirement of 6,200 teachers, while 11,200 retired this year. However, there have been no hirings since 2013.
The Ministry was forced to employ 19,000 substitutes last year. While both the teaching and administrative sectors have both suffered deficiencies, teachers are the most needed.
